Course "Refinements in husbandry of ferrets and pigs"
This is a practical course held in collaboration with the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf.
Besides a vast number of mice the research animal facility at the University Medical Center Hamburg-Eppendorf (Universitätsklinikum Hamburg-Eppendorf, UKE) is keeping smaller numbers of other species, among those ferrets and pigs. Over the years we have developed methods to train the animals in our custody by positive reinforcement. In this course we will introduce the participants into the particular aspects of the species.
We will discuss their needs and the specific “language” in which they communicate and show signs of wellbeing as well as of pain and distress.
Apart from the theoretical background, the course will manly include handson experience with the animals and our positive reinforcement training.
